What teams ask about document classification.
What is document classification software?
Document classification software works out what type each incoming document is, such as a bank statement, a claim form or a visit note, and splits files that hold several documents. Then each document goes to the right extraction model, queue or person. Docsumo is an intelligent document processing (IDP) platform. Its AI document classification splits a mixed file into the documents inside it, labels each one with a document type you name, with no training set, and extracts its fields. Documents it can't classify wait as Unclassified for a person to assign. Docsumo is rated 4.7 out of 5 on G2.
How does automated document classification work?
Docsumo works in five steps. It collects files by email, upload or API, as PDFs, scans, faxes or phone photos, printed or handwritten. It splits each file where each document starts and ends, labels each document with a type you named and a confidence score, extracts its fields with a confidence score on each, and routes the data to your systems. Older tools learn a type from rules or from folders of labeled samples. Docsumo's LLM-based models work from the types you name, and AI Split takes a plain-English definition of each one, with identifiers and optional rules. Documents that match no type wait as Unclassified, and a reviewer can move any document to another type.
Do I need training data to classify documents?
Not with Docsumo. You name the document types you want, picked from the list or typed in, and files are classified only into those types, with no training set. Your operations team writes each type's definition in plain English, in the app, without code. Docsumo's LLM-based models classify a new type from the first document, so there's no ramp-up period. Some cloud classifiers still learn each type from labeled samples. Azure's custom classifier, for example, needs at least five labeled documents of each type, so adding a type means collecting and labeling examples first.
Can Docsumo split a combined PDF into separate documents?
Yes. Splitting, also called document separation, is part of classification in Docsumo. AI Split splits a combined file into its documents from a plain-English split instruction plus a definition, identifiers and optional rules for each document type. It's built for mixed packets such as loan application binders, structured settlement packets and insurance claim packets, where one PDF can hold dozens of documents. Auto-classification and splitting are on the Business plan.
What happens to a document Docsumo can't classify?
It waits as Unclassified for a person to assign to an existing or new document type, so it isn't filed under a wrong guess. A reviewer can also move any classified document to another type, and each correction teaches the classifier. If two types keep getting mixed up, tighten their definitions, identifiers or rules in AI Split.
How accurate is Docsumo's document classification?
Across 250+ document types, Docsumo reaches 99% field-level accuracy, and 95%+ of documents are processed straight through, with no manual review. It doesn't publish a separate figure for classification, so test that on your own packets. Take a sample you've already sorted by hand, include the document types that look alike, and count for each type how many documents land on the right label and how many wait as Unclassified. In production, every label and every extracted field carries a confidence score, documents it can't classify are held as Unclassified for a person, and the classifier learns from each correction a reviewer makes.
Does Docsumo have a document classification API?
Yes. Send files to Docsumo's REST API, then read each document's type, its split pages and its extracted fields back as JSON. Webhooks tell your system when a document's status changes. The free trial includes API and webhook access. Docsumo fits into existing financial workflows: documents come in from your inbox or your own system, and labeled documents and their data go back to your loan origination, ERP or claims system, SAP included, through the API and webhooks. See the API docs and the AI Auto-Classifier guide.
Can Docsumo classify bank statements and other financial documents?
Yes. A borrower's upload is split into its bank statements, pay stubs, W-2s, 1099s, tax returns such as 1040s, 1120-S and 1065 returns with their K-1s, IDs and application, and each one is labeled and read by the model for its type. Docsumo is headquartered in New York, and data can be hosted in the US. Bank statement tables that run across pages are joined into one, and mixed tax packets are sorted by form with each box and line extracted. See bank statement extraction and IRS tax forms.
Can Docsumo classify medical records and other healthcare documents?
Yes. Docsumo's medical records classification splits a compiled medical record or a faxed packet into the documents inside it, such as visit notes, imaging and lab reports, referrals, prior authorizations, CMS-1500 and UB-04 claim forms and EOBs, and labels each one with its type, date and provider. The data goes to your billing, practice management or EHR system. Classification sorts a record by document type, which is a different job from clinical NLP services that find diagnoses and medications inside the text. Docsumo is HIPAA compliant and signs a BAA with customers who process protected health information. See healthcare records classification.
Can Docsumo classify insurance submissions and claim packets?
Yes. You name the types you need, such as ACORD 125, loss run, statement of values or repair estimate, and Docsumo splits each submission or claim PDF into them. A claim packet's loss notice, police report, repair estimate and invoices are labeled and read, then sent to your claims team or system. When a document the file needs is missing, such as a year of loss runs, Docsumo's email agent asks the broker or carrier for it. On the Enterprise plan it also checks loss runs against the losses reported on the ACORD 125. See Docsumo for insurance.
Can Docsumo classify documents at high volume?
Yes. Files come in one at a time or in bulk, by email, upload or API, and each is split and labeled as it lands. A single upload can run to 500 pages with many document types inside, so a whole loan file or claim packet goes in as one file. ClearOne Advantage processed 170,000 documents in nine months with Docsumo, and 95%+ of documents go straight through without manual review.
Can Docsumo classify documents in other languages?
Yes. Docsumo classifies documents in most printed languages, including Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Indic scripts, with the same document types you name. Handwriting support varies by language, so test samples in yours.
Can't we classify documents with ChatGPT?
A general model can label one document you paste in. Classifying every file your team receives also needs splitting at volume, the same labels every time, a queue for documents that match no type, an audit log, an API, and SOC 2 and HIPAA controls, which you would build yourself. Docsumo provides them, using LLM-based models underneath, and your documents are not used to train shared or third-party models.
How much does document classification software cost?
Docsumo's free trial covers 1,000 pages over 14 days, with the API and webhooks, so you can classify a real backlog before you pay. Auto-classification and splitting are on the Business plan, and paid plans are quoted on the pricing page. Cloud classifiers charge per page instead. Azure's custom classifier costs $3 per 1,000 pages and Google's custom classifier $5 per 1,000 for the first million pages a month, and you build the review screens and integrations around them. Automation suites usually quote.
Is Docsumo enterprise-grade and secure enough for financial and healthcare documents?
Docsumo is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant, ISO 27001 certified, and HIPAA and GDPR compliant. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest (AES-256), and your documents are not used to train shared or third-party models. Enterprise teams get SSO, multi-factor authentication, role-based access, an audit log, a test environment, confidence thresholds per field, and a click from any field to its source line. Data can be hosted in the US, the EU or the UK, among other regions. Docsumo is cloud only, with no on-premises option.
Can we test Docsumo on our own documents?
Yes. Book a demo and bring your messiest mixed file, and we'll split and label it live. Or start a free trial with 1,000 pages over 14 days, including the API and webhooks.
Bring your messiest packet to the demo.
