Document AI for healthcare

Intelligent document processing for healthcare

Claims, EOBs, medical records and eligibility packets, read and checked as one file. Only the exceptions reach your team.

  • HIPAA compliant, and we sign a BAA
  • 99% field-level accuracy on 250+ document types
  • 95%+ of documents processed straight through

A physical therapy claim file for Laura K. Bennett with five documents: the CMS-1500 claim form, the member card, the intake form, the visit note and the prior authorization. The date of service, August 18, 2026, and the three units billed agree across the claim form and the visit note, and the prior authorization covers the visit. The name matches on all five documents. The member ID on the claim form, CVH 4471 2039, differs from the card, CVH 4471 2093, so the file is ready for review with one exception.

Every value carries a confidence score.

Your team reviews exceptions, not faxes.

Files that pass every check move on. The rest arrive with the reason, the source line and the values that disagree.

Questions

What healthcare teams ask about intelligent document processing.

What is intelligent document processing in healthcare?

Intelligent document processing (IDP) in healthcare is software that collects, classifies and extracts data from healthcare documents such as claim forms, EOBs, medical records, intake forms and eligibility packets, then checks it against the rest of the file and your rules. It replaces manual keying and re-checking with structured data and a short list of exceptions. Docsumo is an intelligent document processing (IDP) platform that does this for providers, medical billing teams, eligibility services and records reviewers.

Which healthcare documents can Docsumo process?

CMS-1500 and UB-04 claim forms, EOBs and remittance advice, medical records such as visit notes, discharge summaries and lab reports, referral and prior authorization forms, patient intake forms, member cards, and Medicaid applications with the bank statements, IDs and proof of address inside them. Docsumo has pre-trained models for 250+ document types and reads other document types too, including handwritten text.

Is Docsumo HIPAA compliant, and will it sign a BAA?

Yes. Docsumo is HIPAA compliant for protected health information and signs a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with customers who process protected health information; ask your account team for it. Docsumo is also SOC 2 Type 2 audited and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified, and your documents are not used to train shared or third-party models. Access is set by role, team and document type, and every review, correction and approval is recorded in an audit log.

How is IDP different from OCR for healthcare documents?

OCR turns a scan into text. It doesn't know which number is the member ID and which is the claim number, it breaks when a payer changes a layout, and it can't tell that one fax holds six documents. IDP classifies and splits the packet, extracts named fields and tables with confidence scores, reads handwritten text, and checks the values against the rest of the file, so the output is data your billing or records system can use.

Can Docsumo process Medicaid applications?

Yes. Eligibility teams use it for Medicaid applications and the bank statements, pay stubs, IDs and proof of address inside them. Each document is read, missing documents are flagged when the packet arrives, and name and address are matched across the packet before a caseworker opens it.

Does Docsumo replace our billing or coding team?

No. Docsumo is software, not an outsourced review team. It reads the codes, dates and amounts on each document and checks them against the rest of the file, and your staff review what it flags, so coding and clinical decisions and the review itself stay in-house.

Can Docsumo connect to our EHR or billing system?

Yes. Documents come in by email, upload or REST API, and checked data goes to your EHR, practice management or billing system as JSON by webhook, with a confidence score on every field. A separate test environment lets your engineers validate the integration before it reaches production.

How long does it take to get started?

You can start the same day with a free trial: 1,000 pages for 14 days, using pre-trained models. Cross-document validation and case management, which check a whole file, are on the Enterprise plan. Ask your account team for the BAA before you send protected health information, and for a production rollout, book a demo and bring a sample file.
