Azure AI Document Intelligence or a document intelligence platform?
Azure AI Document Intelligence is an API you build on, with published per-page prices. Docsumo is a platform your team works in, with an API of its own. Here is what each one gives you.

What teams ask about document intelligence.
What is document intelligence?
Document intelligence is software that reads documents and returns structured, checked data. It labels each document by type, extracts named fields and tables with a confidence score, checks them against rules and other documents, and sends people only the values it isn't sure about. The category goes by other names too: intelligent document processing (IDP), document AI and document understanding. Docsumo is an intelligent document processing (IDP) platform that does all of this, with a review queue and checks across documents. The long answer: what is document intelligence.
Is Docsumo the same as Azure AI Document Intelligence?
No. Azure AI Document Intelligence, formerly Azure Form Recognizer, is Microsoft's document intelligence service: an API that returns text, key-value pairs, tables and structure, priced per 1,000 pages. Docsumo is a separate product: an intelligent document processing (IDP) platform with its own API. It adds a review queue, checks across documents (on the Enterprise plan) and workflows, so your team works in it rather than building around it. Azure Document Intelligence alternatives, compared.
How is document intelligence different from OCR?
OCR turns a page image into text. Document intelligence uses OCR as its first step, then works out what each document is, pulls the named fields and tables, and checks them. You get a borrower's name and monthly deposits, not a page of characters.
What does a platform add to a document intelligence API?
An API returns data to your code; everything after that is yours to build. A platform adds the parts teams need in production: a review queue with per-field thresholds, checks across documents, an audit log, a test environment, and workflows that send the data to your systems by API and webhook.
Does it need templates or training data?
No. Docsumo's LLM-based models read new document types without templates or training data. To sort documents, you name the document types you want, with no training set, and documents it can't classify wait as Unclassified for a person to assign. Accuracy improves as reviewers correct fields.
How accurate is it?
Ask what's measured. Docsumo reports field-level accuracy, 99% across 250+ document types in production, and the share of documents that go straight through with no review, 95%+. Every field and every document label carries a confidence score, and values below your threshold go to a reviewer with the source line highlighted.
Which documents can it read?
Bank statements, pay stubs, W-2s, 1099s, tax returns, IDs, ACORD forms, loss runs, property schedules, certificates of insurance, invoices, purchase orders and utility bills, among 250+ document types, plus any other document by naming the fields you want. It reads scans, PDFs, phone photos and handwritten text, and tables that run across pages come out as one table.
Where is our data kept, and is it secure?
Docsumo is a hosted service with nothing to install, and your data can be hosted in the regions listed on the security page, including the US, the EU (Frankfurt) and the UK (London). Docsumo is SOC 2 Type 2 audited, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified, and HIPAA and GDPR compliant, and your documents and extracted data are not used to train shared or third-party models.
How is it priced, and can we test it?
Docsumo's free trial covers 1,000 pages over 14 days, with API and webhooks. Paid plans are custom quotes, with up to 10% off annual plans. Cloud document intelligence APIs charge per 1,000 pages, and automation suites usually quote after a demo.
