When payroll data runs out, the documents still need checking.
Payroll data connections cover many salaried applicants. Everyone else sends documents.
| Payroll dataA connection, where the employer reports | DocumentsChecked by Docsumo, whatever the applicant sends | |
|---|---|---|
| Salaried, large employer | Often found | Pay stubs and W-2s, checked against each other |
| Self-employed | No payroll record | Tax returns, 1099s and deposits |
| Gig and contract work | Depends on the platform | 1099s and deposits from every source |
| Two jobs, or a new job | Only employers that report | A pay stub per employer, plus the offer or employment letter |
| Small or local employer | Often not covered | The same pay stub, W-2 and deposit checks |
Docsumo works alongside payroll data connections: it checks the documents they don't cover.

Flags year-to-date pay further behind last year's pace than your threshold.
You choose which checks run and the threshold for each.
The one exception, pay 10% behind last year's pace, is a question for your team, not a decline: unpaid time off earlier in the year would explain it. Cross-document checks are on the Enterprise plan.
Your team reviews exceptions, not pay stubs.
Files that pass every check move on. The rest arrive with the reason, the source line and the figures that disagree.

What teams ask about income verification.
What is income verification software?
Income verification software reads the documents applicants send as proof of income, such as pay stubs, W-2s, 1099s, tax returns and bank statements, and checks them against each other and the application. Docsumo is an intelligent document processing (IDP) platform. Its automated income verification extracts every figure with a confidence score, runs the cross-document checks you configure, and sends your team only the files where something disagrees.
How do lenders verify income?
From payroll data where an employer reports it, and from documents everywhere else. With documents, the underwriter compares the pay stub's rate and year-to-date pay with the W-2, the W-2 with the tax return, and payroll deposits on the bank statements with the stated income, then checks that the employer's name matches on each. Docsumo does the reading and matching; your team decides the files it flags.
How do mortgage lenders verify income?
Mortgage lenders usually collect recent pay stubs, W-2s, tax returns and bank statements, and compare them with the income on the loan application. Docsumo extracts each document and checks it against the application and the others before the file reaches underwriting. It delivers checked figures; qualifying income is still calculated under your own policy.
What documents are used for income verification?
Pay stubs, W-2s, 1099s, federal tax returns (Form 1040 with Schedules C and E), bank statements and employment letters are the most common. Docsumo reads all of them, digital or scanned, plus pension, benefit and other income letters, because it handles any document type, not only its 250+ pre-trained ones.
How do self-employed applicants verify income?
With no employer payroll to check, self-employed applicants send tax returns (Schedule C for a sole proprietor, Schedule E for rental and pass-through income), the 1099s from the businesses that paid them, and bank statements. Docsumo extracts each form line by line and checks the deposits against the stated income, so the reviewer starts from the gaps.
Does Docsumo replace The Work Number or payroll data connections?
No. Payroll data connections work well for applicants whose employers report to them. Docsumo checks the documents everyone else sends: self-employed and gig income, second jobs, small employers, and applicants who don't connect a payroll account. It works alongside them.
Is it only for lenders?
No. Any team that verifies income from documents can run the same checks, including teams that decide eligibility for programs and benefits. The documents are the same; the rules and thresholds are yours, and Docsumo's controls include SOC 2 Type 2, HIPAA and GDPR.
How accurate and fast is automated income verification?
Docsumo reaches 99% field-level accuracy on 250+ document types in production, and 95%+ of documents go straight through without manual review. A document takes under five minutes, down from two hours or more by hand. Values below the confidence threshold you set for a field go to a reviewer, who sees the source line highlighted.
