What we extract

Every meter and every charge, from any provider.

A utility bill ties an account and a service address to a billing period, the usage on each meter and the charges for it. Docsumo reads all of it, electric, gas or water, the same way every time.

  • ContractsBilled supply rate against your contract rate⚑ 7.9% above
  • Past billsThis account and period haven't been processed before✓ Not a duplicate

At the contract's $0.0845, the September supply charge is $63.11 lower. The bill goes to review with both rates side by side.

Usage, demand and cost by meter go to your energy platform or data warehouse by API.

Each team sets its own checks.

Checks against your own lists (contracts, properties, meters) use master data lookup. Checks across documents, such as the license, use cross-document validation. Both are on the Enterprise plan.

G2 review“Huge time savings in parsing utility bills!”

“Docsumo helps us parse utility bills in order to extract the consumption details. We used to parse these bills manually for several hours and it prevented us from serving more customers. With Docsumo, it's down to either fully automatic parsing or only a few minutes per customer.”

Questions

What teams ask about utility bills.

What is utility bill data extraction?

Utility bill data extraction is the automated capture of the account number, service address, billing period, meter reads, usage, rates, charges and total due from a utility bill, turning a PDF or scan into structured data. Docsumo is an intelligent document processing (IDP) platform that does this for electric, gas and water bills from any provider, then checks each bill against your contracts, your property list or the rest of the file, so your team reviews only the exceptions.

What counts as a utility bill?

A utility bill is a periodic statement for a service delivered to an address: electricity, natural gas, water and sewer, and often trash, internet or a landline. It shows the provider, the account holder, the service address, the billing period, usage by meter and the amount due. Because it ties a name to an address on a recent date, lenders, fintechs and healthcare programs often accept one as proof of address.

Can Docsumo read bills from any utility provider?

Yes. Docsumo's utility bill models are tested on bills from major US providers, including Duke Energy, PG&E, Xcel Energy and DTE Energy, in digital PDFs, scans and phone photos, with no templates. Bills from other providers or countries can be handled by fine-tuning a model on your own samples.

Can it handle electric, gas and water on one bill?

Yes. A combined bill comes out with a section per service, and each section has its meters, start and end reads, tariff, consumption, demand and a table of line items. A bill with several meters on one account keeps every meter separate, so usage and cost can be tracked meter by meter.

What is utility bill OCR, and how is it different from extraction?

Utility bill OCR turns a scanned or photographed bill into text. Extraction goes further: it finds the named fields in that text, such as the account number, usage and total due, reads the charges table row by row, and gives every value a confidence score. Docsumo does both, then checks the result, so what reaches your system is data rather than raw text.

How does Docsumo check a utility bill used as proof of address?

It reads the customer name, service address, provider and issue date, then compares them with the application and the ID in the same file and with your own rules, such as a bill issued within the last 60 days. Files that agree move on; a name or address that differs goes to a reviewer with both values side by side. Checks across documents are on the Enterprise plan.

How does the extracted data reach our systems?

Bills come in by email, upload or REST API, and structured JSON goes back to your energy platform, property management system, LOS or data warehouse by webhook, with a confidence score on every field. A separate test environment lets your engineers validate changes before they reach production.

Can we test it on our own bills?

Yes. Book a demo and bring a real bill, multi-meter or scanned, and we will run it live. You can also start a free trial: 1,000 pages for 14 days, with no training data needed.
