Catch the billing error before the invoice is paid.
Each BOL is checked on its own and against the load's other paperwork. Only mismatches reach your team.
Inside the BOL
Line weights and pieces add up to the totals, and required fields are there.
Against the rate confirmation
Carrier, pickup date, pieces and weight agree with what was booked.
Against the carrier invoice
PRO and BOL numbers match; billed weight and class match the BOL.
Against the delivery receipt
Pieces received, and any exceptions noted at delivery.
Your plan
Cross-document checks are on the Enterprise plan. Uncertain fields go to review on every plan.
Your team reviews exceptions, not paperwork.
Loads that pass every check move on. The rest arrive with the reason, the source line and the values that disagree.

What freight teams ask about bill of lading OCR.
What is bill of lading OCR?
Bill of lading OCR is software that reads a BOL, whether typed, scanned or photographed, and turns it into structured data: the shipper, consignee and carrier, the BOL and PRO numbers, and every freight line with pieces, weight and class. Plain OCR returns text. Docsumo, an intelligent document processing platform, returns named fields with confidence scores and checks them against the rate confirmation, carrier invoice and delivery receipt, so your team only handles the loads that don't match.
What data can be extracted from a bill of lading?
The shipper, consignee and bill-to parties with their addresses; the BOL, PRO, PO and shipper reference numbers; the carrier and SCAC; the ship date, freight terms and special instructions; and every freight line with handling units, packages, weight, hazmat flag, description, NMFC item and class. Field names and the output schema are configurable.
Can it read driver photos and handwritten notes on signed BOLs?
Yes. Docsumo reads scans, phone photos and digital PDFs, including handwritten text such as notes and exceptions written on a signed BOL. Fields the model is unsure about go to a review queue instead of straight through.
Does each carrier's BOL format need a template?
No. OCR reads the characters and language models structure them into your fields, so a new carrier's layout doesn't need setup. Docsumo has pre-trained models for 250+ document types, and custom models can be trained for documents specific to your business.
How does Docsumo match a BOL to the carrier invoice and rate confirmation?
Cross-document validation compares the BOL with the load's other paperwork: carrier, pickup date, pieces and weight against the rate confirmation; PRO and BOL numbers, billed weight and class against the carrier invoice; and pieces received against the delivery receipt. Loads that agree move on, and the rest go to review with the values that disagree. Cross-document checks are on the Enterprise plan.
Can it read rate confirmations, delivery receipts and carrier invoices too?
Yes. The same pipeline reads the rest of a load's paperwork: rate confirmations, carrier invoices and freight bills, delivery receipts and PODs, and packing lists. A mixed upload, such as a driver's scanned packet, is split into its documents first.
How does the data reach our TMS or ERP?
Documents come in by email, upload or REST API, and structured JSON goes back to your TMS, ERP or freight audit system by webhook, with a confidence score on every field. A separate test environment lets your engineers validate changes before they reach production.
Is our shipment data secure?
Docsumo is SOC 2 Type 2 audited and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified. Your documents and extracted data are not used to train shared or third-party models, access is set by role, team and document type, and every review and approval is recorded in an audit log.
Can we test it on our own BOLs?
Yes. Start a free trial with 1,000 pages for 14 days, using pre-trained models and no training data. Or book a demo and bring a stack of real BOLs from different carriers; we run them live.
